Ecstatic Dance is free movement without steps, without alcohol and usually without talking on the dance floor. A DJ takes the room on a musical wave: arriving slowly, building up, peaking and coming back to stillness. You move however feels right, barefoot and at your own pace. Related practices include 5Rhythms, Biodanza, Contact Improvisation and conscious dance. Many evenings start with a short opening circle and end with a moment of silence or a sound journey.
In Zurich, ecstatic dance currently happens most often at MIIN RUUM, Tanzschule, DanceSquare22, Altstetten and Kirchgemeindehaus Oberstrass. Monday is the busiest day. Most prices are between 25 and 35, typically around 35 CHF. 2 of the events are free. 23 organisers offer 42 dates in the next 6 months.
Do I need to know how to dance?
No. There are no steps and no right or wrong. Many people come alone for their first time.
What should I wear?
Comfortable clothes you can move freely in. People dance barefoot or in socks.
